APOPSCALYPSE - 2012 Spring Concert!

posted Feb 13, 2012 3:32 PM by Harvard Pops   [ updated Apr 3, 2012 1:05 PM ]

It is finally here -- the year to end it all! And what better way to spend it than joining our brave heroes in a time-traveling adventure into the past? After an initial Overture to Candide (Bernstein), you may just find yourself swept into a different millennium, far before 2012, but close to a shocking apocalypse of its own.

When our time travelers are quite literally thrown into A Whole New World (Menken), they are joined by a new companion, a young Sorcerer's Apprentice (Dukas). Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when the apprentice's master, an evil wizard, discovers and imprisons our heroes -- a truly Les Misérables(Schönberg) situation.

Will our time traveling heroes be able to outsmart the evil wizard and his apocalyptic plans, and eventually make it Back to the Future (Douglas)? Will they be able to successfully complete a quest as epic as that of The Lord of the Rings (Shore) on their own? Or will they need some Fuel (Metallica) to help them? Whether you do or do not buy into the apocalypse hype, be sure to join us for this epic concert. By the end, you won't help but declare: "I'm a Believer (Diamond)!"

Friday, April 13 | 8 pm | Lowell Lecture Hall
$10 general | $8 student

From Russia with Pops, Friday October 21st LLH 8 p.m.

FROM RUSSIA WITH POPS

The Russians are coming! Tchaikovsky (and Other Russians) (Kaye) are coming! Playing on Themes from 007 (Custer), this concert will find the American Orchestra swept into the middle of an international conflict fraught with dissonance, deception, and perhaps a Hoedown (Copland) or two.

When Agent James Williams is sent on an Imperial March (Williams) into Soviet territory to destroy a doomsday device, the mission seems simple enough — at first. But his mission and his very life are soon jeopardized by the Soviet Orchestra's special forces, the hotheaded General Secretary Rachmaninoff and his Piano Concerto No. 2-playing minion, and even a flying balloon house!

Is the gig finally Up (Giacchino) for Agent Williams? Is he The Trooper (Iron Maiden) who can lead the charge no matter what kind of crazy percussion instruments are in his way? Or will his whole venture end in a sad Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin)? See what danger awaits when the Pops travel Back in the USSR (Lennon/McCartney)!

Friday, October 21 | 8 pm | Lowell Lecture Hall

$10 general | $8 student | $6 freshmen

Tickets may be obtained from the Harvard Box Office, from any Pops member, or by emailing harvardpops@gmail.com.

Pops Comes of Age

featuring guest performer Brad Ellis, pianist fromGlee!

Gabe and Leah's middle school has always been a peaceful place with a fantastic orchestra.  However, it quickly becomes The School for Scandal (Barber) when the Wicked (Schwartz) Mr. Ratigan gets the beloved conductor Ben Kenobi fired and takes control of the orchestra himself!

It's up to orchestra members Gabe and Leah to fix everything, with some help from some Pirates of the Carribean (Zimmer) and a Fiddler on the Roof (Williams).  But Ratigan won't be easy to usurp, and they'll need to "come of age" quickly, as their confrontation is sure to Make a Man Out of You (Wilder).  As things become more chaotic than a Danse Bacchanale (Saint-Saens), will Gabe and Leah be able to succeed?  Well, Don't Stop Believin' (Journey)!

The action begins in Lowell Lecture Hall at 8pm on Saturday, April 9th.  Tickets ($10 general, $8 student/senior) may be obtained from the Harvard Box Office, from any Pops member, or by emailing harvardpops@gmail.com.
